“Mis Deseos Final”

“Mis Deseos Final” sprang up as prelude to my piece “Better Yet When Dead: after Coco Fusco”, a public performance where I staged my own funeral in the Spring of 2009- “Mis Deseos Final” translate as “My Final Wishes”. 

The video serves as specific time based relic 
of my life, reciting my personal convictions and final goodbyes for my planned death. Wanting to take control of every step that ultimately led to my time of death. This piece explores the concept of if we could plan out our own deaths what would we say?

Hoping to steer the viewer away from “how or “when” I died- I wanted to make those question irrelevant- Focusing solely on my over the top justifications for my death. Believing that I cannot die in vein, my wishes and goodbyes are recited in Spanish, adding subtitles
and music in the background I wanted total control in the edit of this video- hoping to close any gaps where this video (and my death) may be easily dismissed.

In the past eight months I have collected various emails, text messages, and conversations with an individual that sparked an interest in me.
 Unknowingly where these saved documents and relationship with this person would ultimately lead me, I continued to save every form of communication that was elicited with me over a span of time.
Recently I finally gathered these materials to create a solid piece.
YELLOW- Yellow is suppose to be a warm and embracing color, something that makes one feel safe and at peace.
My association with yellow is not that warmness and state of tranquility.
 Yellow is a state of weakness, and repulsion. The following series of correspondences evokes and embodies that feeling of disgust and cowardice.
Cowardice to address the situation, and disgust at that manner it handled.
 In this series Chronicles of a Lesbian Correspondence, yellow is that lack of color and warm safety. It is a feeling, an event, and a recollection of everything that was happening at the moment in time.
 My these document are a series of eleven 16x22 inch frames; the frames display the enlarged bold black and white text correspondences in a chronological grid formation; In order to create a materialized solid piece of art.
 Enlarging these documents and exposing the viewer to this piece of my personal life as well as those involved, was something that I feel leads to a vital part of artistic growth.  To display this information publicly without fear and cowardice is ultimately what I want. While I may feel a sense of closure in this situation, I cannot eliminate the bodily feeling of disgust that I get whenever I encounter these documents.
These correspondences are a complete honest unedited recollection of that event that I have chosen to preserve; the names and contact information have been changed in order to protect the privacy of those involved, except for mine.
My hope in presenting a piece of this bold nature publicly is something that can be left for interpretation. As an artist I want to communicate in an honest manner to my audience, and I can only hope they can place themselves in the situation I presenting to make forth their own judgements and conclusions.

Born N Raised: Arleen Delima is a video performance  running with theme of “being put on display” I am currently a secretary in an office and have decided to use the time and resources there to make videos, under a “secretarial point of view”. Using a webcam and  eliminating any sort of professional attribute, I put on heavy eyeliner, dark make-up, and lipstick  to extenuate the sort of “ghettoness” that lies beneath the secretarial exterior when no one is around.
Using the Miami based  artist Dj Khaled’s song entitled “Born N Raised”, I being to express my inner urges and desires,  exaggeratingly pouting my lips, making sexual faces, and fluffing my hair. I begin to tap into the idea of how “although I am a secretary, I secretly want to just make sensual webcam videos”  A deep inner suppressed desire to let my street attitude come out. But more too the point, I choose the song “Born N Raised” because it exemplified how, although I may have an extravagant office job (where I must be on my best behavior..) There is still the inner me that I’m an trying to suppress, my inner “ghettoness” that can only be express when I’m walking the streets of Miami.
This can also apply outside the office setting, where in any location I must act a certain way.
In sense I often feel that I can be professional, feminine, educated, and still maintain Miami street credibility.

Gaga for GaGa: A Secretarial Exploration of a Pop Sensation is the second series from these “secretarial” perspectives. Lady GaGa had certainly become interesting subject for me. GaGa with her outlandish, outspoken radical feminist views and poignant yet visually illuminating music videos/performances have completely attracted me. Her single “Bad Romance”, just so happen to coincide with the first video I had made. Mimicking certain characteristics and visual props from her video, I wanted to experiment and see how far a secretary could portray a pop icon with only the tools at her desk.

Were the first two that premiered on an online database.  I hoped to invoked viewers to keep watching and questioning: “What will this lonely secretary, present us on November 28 2009?” Every couple of days I uploaded a teaser closer to the premier date. (These commercial served as promos for the final premier as well as  corresponded with Lady GaGa’s second Album debut "The Fame Monster" [11.23.09])
